What will be tested on the CBT test

The practice of nursing or midwifery in the UK requires knowledge of the health needs of patients as well as an understanding of integrated, holistic processes fundamental to professional practice. The CBT includes items written at various cognitive levels, which are designed to test your knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of professional nursing and midwifery practice. As you are an overseas trained nurse, the NMC expects you to meet UK pre-registered nurse standard. Therefore, NMC has published a criterion (blueprint) which you need to follow to pass your CBT test. We have outlined this course to match these criteria and designed this module to enable learning in a systematic way of approach.

The entry-level domains, competencies and essential skills clusters from pre-registration nursing and midwifery UK education standards, along with The Code: Standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives (NMC,2015) were used to develop the test blueprint (Core Competencies). Our practice questions based on these core competencies.

Domains tested in CBT (Blueprint)

The NMC set standards for competence for nurses to remain on the register and they wanted overseas trained nurses to achieve this knowledge by attempting the test of competence Part-1 which can find in four domains:

Nursing in the UK is organized around specific and distinct professional fields of practice. Individuals are usually registered in a single specialist field and have undertaken three years of pre-registration education and training in their specific field. These fields are:

Adult nursing

• Children’s nursing

• Learning disabilities nursing

• Mental health nursing

Each of these fields is specifically tested by a distinct CBT and candidates will only sit the CBT for the professional field of practice in which they are seeking UK registration. The standards for competence which identify the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for entry into each field of nursing are organized around four generic nursing domains. Each of these domains is represented proportionally in the CBT. At present, ONT-UK only provides training for the Adult nursing field of practice in which most of the overseas nurses are applied for.

A proportion of questions must be passed and these are known as critical questions. Critical questions relate to patient and public safety, for example, medication calculations which must be passed.

Cbt Questions And Answers

Answering the questions
  • Maintain a reasonable pace, spending a maximum of two minutes on each item.
  • Always select the answer you believe to be the ‘most’ correct from the options offered.
  • You can review answers and change them if you wish. The CBT does not use negative scoring if a question is not answered, so randomly selecting answers or guessing answers will not improve your result.
