OS X El Capitan remains available for Mac computers that can't upgrade to macOS Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, or Sierra, or that need to upgrade to El Capitan first.
If you haven't updated to Catalina yet, read on to find out how to update to Catalina or Mojave from High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, or even older version of Mac OS X below.
- El Capitan and older Mac OS's cannot see drives formatted as APFS, so they do not appear on the Desktop. To reboot to your Catalina, Mojave or High Sierra formatted APFS drives restart your Mac and press and hold. Down the option/ alt key until the Startup Manager screen appears. Select your Catalina, Mojave or High Sierra.
- I still have a laptop with snow leopard. I also have an iMac with Tiger, and iMac with El Capitan, a mini mac with El Capitan (upgraded from Lion), a 3g laptop with Tiger, and 2 mac book pro’s, one with Mojave, one with Sierra. I am very disappointed with apple and the direction they have taken.
